Satellite navigation: Photorealistic display

photorealistic satellite navigation in-car

Churchill Navigation is taking a different tack on in-car navigation: make it photorealistic and expensive. Soon to hit the market at around $7,000, it will typically be used in large vehicles such as RVs, where a larger monitor can show off its map detail.

The system provides 1 terabyte (1000 gigabytes) of data capacity for the satellite imagery of the entire world and aerial photography of the United States with a detail level from 1-meter to 6-inch resolution with seamless transition from satellite to aerial photo to road maps. Changeable camera angles allow views such as "flying 50 feet over the vehicle", or looking straight down on you as you drive.

Displays are available from 7" to 10.4" to 19", and sizes in between. Control of the system is by touch-screen or by separate keyboard and mouse.
